Chiropractic is a hands-on, drug free profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of chironeuromusculoskeletal disorders and the effects of these disorders on the nervous system and general health.

The practise of Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily of the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.

Chiropractors take a detailed patient history before conducting a thorough physical, orthopaedic, neurological and chiropractic examination. Depending on the complaint the patient may then be referred for X-rays or other diagnostic imaging. The Chiropractor will then discuss the findings with you and your options regarding the most appropriate treatment.

Chiropractic treatment involves a combination of soft tissue and trigger point therapy, joint mobilization and adjustment at specific segments of the neuromusculoskeletal system. This serves to improve biomechanical joint function, optimise proprioceptive feedback to the brain and reduce any pressure to spinal nerves. When appropriate, Chiropractors will refer patients to other appropriate healthcare professionals including General Practitioners, Neurologists, Orthopaedic Specialists, Naturopaths, Counsellors, Massage Therapists and the like. There exists a wealth of scientific evidence showing the effectiveness of Chiropractic treatment for back and neck pain as well as headaches and there is growing body of evidence showing its effectiveness for somatovisceral disorders.

Being holistic in nature, Chiropractors treat the whole person and as such assess an individual’s nutritional status and mental well-being.

Chiropractors undertake a minimum of five years University training in areas of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology, radiology, orthopaedics and neurology. Chiropractors must also participate in ongoing continuing professional development in order to retain National Registration.

Many Chiropractors choose to participate in Post Graduate education in disciplines including Paediatrics, Nutrition and Wellness, Sports Chiropractic and Functional Neurology.
