Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, intuitive, hands-on technique which can be effective in alleviating pain, headaches, stress, and tension. It addresses the rhythmic flow of cerebral-spinal fluid which flows between the head (cranium) and the pelvis (sacrum).
The craniosacral rhythm is as essential, tangible and measurable as the more familiar rhythms of our breath and heart rate. It naturally cycles around 6-10 times a minute. When the craniosacral fluid flows in an unobstructed wave, we are in a state of ease and balance, our body’s natural intelligence arises and our self-healing mechanisms are activated.
However, stress, tension, illness, physical injury, even prolonged habitual postural distortions such as sitting at a desk all day can disrupt our craniosacral rhythm, and symptoms such as headache, migraine, IBS, neck pain, hip pain, anxiety etc then arise.
Craniosacral therapy is often a deeply meditative experience for my clients. As I access the cranial wave, clients settle into a state of relaxation and subtle awareness, enhancing their innate mind-body connection and accessing higher levels of consciousness. They may start to experience ‘still points’, natural pauses in the cranial wave in which insights, wisdom and intuition arise. At other times, the cranial wave might come to an abrupt stop. This usually means that old material (wounds, traumas, outdated beliefs, family patterns, generational trauma etc) are arising. As I wait patiently, maintaining gentle contact with my client, this material gradually clears from the body-mind, from the client’s consciousness, and the wave returns, often taking the client into an even deeper state of relaxation and healing.
After the session, clients report feeling very calm and settled. Their breathing changes, their nervous system moves into a state of relaxation, pains reduce, problems seem more manageable. Many report feeling connected to their innate state of wisdom, compassion, insight and clarity. Others say that they feel grounded, connected, attuned. They notice they are less reactive, less easily triggered, less easily bothered by day to day events.
Craniosacral therapy can be helpful for people experiencing anxiety, chronic pain, headaches, migraines, stress and tension related disorders, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disorders, chronic illness and post-traumatic stress. It is safe, non-invasive, and compatible with any other medical or natural therapy.
