Pain is a complex interaction of physical, emotional and mental factors, all of which feed into each other and can feed the cycle of ongoing pain. When we are in pain, we can become reluctant to move, for fear of triggering further pain. However, limiting our movement leads to further loss of muscle tone, strength and flexibility, which in turn leads to further pain.

A gentle yoga practice for chronic pain involves coming to know our bodies more deeply, coming to understand what triggers- and lessens- our pain, and learning to meet our bodies in a deeply nurturing and cooperative manner. We learn which movements make us feel better, release stored tension, encourage softening and expansion, and which movements to avoid.


It also involves coming to a deeper understanding of our own individual reactions to pain and learning that the way we respond to our pain can influence its duration and intensity. Once we have this knowledge, we can begin to alter our relationship to the pain in ways that, over time, reduce it. As our pain lessens, our strength and resilience grow, and we can transform the negative spiral of chronic pain into a positive spiral of improving health and wellbeing.

This is a very personal journey. It is your journey. My role as a teacher is to guide, nurture and support you as you begin to rediscover your bodies capabilities, gently challenge its limitations, and reawaken its innate potential for healing and recovery.
