What is Homeopathy?

WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine based on the understanding that mind and body are interconnected. Homeopathy is the second most widely used medicine in the world and is recognized by the World Health Organisation.

When working with homeopathy, we treat the whole person, an individual’s collection of mental, physical and emotion symptoms, as opposed to treating common symptoms of a named disease. Lifestyle, hereditary factors, and health history are also explored, and treatment is tailored to the individual.

For example, ten people with migraines might all receive a different medicine according to their unique expression of symptoms and individual characteristics.

Practitioners of homeopathy uses the idea that we all have an internal ‘vital force’, or energy which enables us to grow and repair and overcome stresses in the environment. When the vital force is under too much pressure, we start to produce symptoms, and these are the expression of our ‘dis-ease’. When taking a homeopathic remedy, this stimulates the vital force (or immune system) into healing itself and restoring balance.

German physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) founded homeopathy over 200 years ago. The word Homeopathy refers to ‘homeos’ – similar and ‘pathos’ – disease.

In England, France, and Germany homeopathy is part of their National Health Service, it is practiced in many other countries including Australia and continues to increase in popularity.

WHAT CAN HOMEOPATHY TREAT?

This form of holistic treatment is gently, safe, and effective which can be used for many different types of conditions including chronic health complaints, acute conditions and first aid situations.

It is safe to use in pregnancy, with babies, children, adults, and while taking other medications. Homeopathic healing works deeply, meaning lasting, positive healing on the physical, mental, and emotional levels can be achieved.

Homeopathic treatment is believed to stimulate the body’s ability to fight infection and susceptibility to disease. One famous family that uses homeopathy is the British Royal Family, they have used it since Queen Victoria’s time in 1830.

HOW DOES HOMEOPATHY WORK?

The idea that what can cause, can also cure is the base of homeopathy. A dose of a substance can cause certain symptoms in a healthy person. When the same substance, prepared in a minute dose, is given to someone suffering similar symptoms, it will cure the ailment.

The two key principles

  1. “Like cures like”—the concept that a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people; and
  2. “Law of minimum dose”—the concept that the lower the dose of the medication, the greater its effectiveness. When given the least amount of medicine the bodies healing response is stimulated.

Some examples of ‘like cures like’ principles;

  • If you know that feeling of drinking too much coffee and not being able to sleep, coffee as a homeopathic remedy may treat sleeplessness and promote deep, restful sleep.
  • The common honeybee can cause an inflamed, itchy, swollen, painful sting in humans. When used as a homeopathic remedy honeybee Vernon, Apis mellifera, reduces inflammation, swelling, itchiness and pain and is a common first aid remedy used in homeopathy.
  • Cutting up an onion can make our eyes water. When prepared as a homeopathic remedy it can be useful in treating hay fever.

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES

The carefully selected homeopathic medicines work on stimulating the body’s natural system of healing and strengthening the immune system.

The medicines are made from a variety of sources, largely plants, animals, and minerals according to strict international guidelines. In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is the regulatory body.

These medicines are highly diluted substances, to stimulate the body’s energy to generate a healing reaction. The medicines are dispensed in small pillules or drops and do-not have toxic side effects. The patient’s symptoms are matched with their similar homeopathic remedy.

Patients are most often given one medicine at a time, matching the unique expression of their symptoms with a similar remedy. Dosage will vary from one dose only, to daily, weekly, or as needed. Instructions are provided with the medicines.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER TAKING YOUR HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE

This treatment is very gentle! Often people do not notice that their symptoms have disappeared, it is not until close examination of their symptoms that they are surprised to note that many of their ailments are no longer there; headaches have stopped, they feel better within themselves, energy levels have improved, the quality of their sleep has improved, and they haven’t even noticed!

Follow ups in the early stages of treatment are extremely important as this is where treatment can evolve to then work through layers of dis-ease and restore dynamic health with homeopathy.

Response to homeopathic medicines is individual. Some people don’t even notice that their symptoms have improved. People may experience a slight aggravation of symptoms before improvement and for others there might be a return of old symptoms in a very mild form from a complaint experienced earlier in life, or there may be an increase in discharges as the body pushes out impurities and begins to heal.

The first sign of improvement is most often on a deep level, where you notice aspects such as increased energy, improved quality of sleep and a feeling of wellbeing. This is often the first signs of improvement, before physical symptoms start to improve and disappear.
